ARTHRITIS

Arthritis, Transplants, Lupus

Scientists have revealed, after careful study and testing that fish oils markedly reduce the symptoms of rheumatoid arthritis so that patients in some ways return to normal.

At a conference of the British Society for Immunology in December, l997 and summarized in the journal Immunology Today, June l998* (though not in the mainstream media,) they also reported favorable effects on organ transplants and the disease, lupus.

On July 22, l999, The New York Times observed that a top-rated basketball player, Sean Elliot, would soon receive a kidney transplant. Since physicians rarely read their medical journals, it is sad to say that his doctor is far more likely to use the powerful and admittedly destructive drug cyclosporin than the rather benign fish oil capsules.

DETAILS: Favorable reports on the use of fish oils have also been reported in the journals Arthritis Rheum., Journal of Clin. Investigation, Clinical Science, New England Journal of Medicine, Amer. Jrl. of Clin. Nutrition, etc., etc.

*Credit for summarizing the meeting should go to Dr. Philip Calder, Inst. of Human Nutrition, U. of Southampton, Southampton, UK SO16 7PX.
