"'The
herb] stinging nettles may reduce the pain and disability associated
with osteoarthritis," reports Lancet, the British Medical Journal,
vol. 355, 2000.
Dr. Colin Randall of Plymouth U., U.K., studied 27 patients who had this
condition, none of whom had used nettles before. They applied stinging
nettle leaf for one week, then white deadnettle (which doesn't sting)
as a placebo.
They reported that "Pain and disability 'was] significantly
lower after one week of treatment with the stinging nettle,
and there was a reduction in their use of drugs.
The stinging was a side effect, but no apparent serious effects were
observed.
