Ashwagandha--A Miracle Herb?
Ashwagandha as an
Anti-Depressant

has been used to stabilize mood in patients with behavioral
disturbances. The present study investigated the the...antidepressant
actions of 'an ingredient] from 'Ashwagandha]
roots, in 'animals.] WSG 'the ingredient] (20 and 50mg. per kilogram) 'a
kilogram is 2.2 lbs.] was administered orally once daily for 5 days and
the results were compared by those elicited by the 'drug] benzodiazepine
lorazepan (0.5mg/kg injected) for 'drug-reducing anxiety] and by the
tricyclic anti-depressant, imipramine...for the antidepressant
investigations...
"WSG 'Ashwagandha
component] induced an 'anti-anxiety effect,] comparable to that produced
by lorazepam..."
"Further,
both WSG 'Ashwagandha
component] also exhibited an
antidepressant effect, comparable with the induced
by imipramine 'drug]...
"The
investigations support the use of WS 'Ashwagandha component]
as a mood stabilizer in clinical conditions of anxiety and
depression..."
