Shark Cartilage
"Since the publication of W. Lane's
book, Sharks Don't Get Cancer in l992, shark cartilage has become the 'cancer
cure' of the l990's," begins a letter to the British medical journal, Lancet. *
The writer is Dr. E. Ernst, Director of the
Department of Complimentary Medicine, Postgraduate Medical School, U. of Exeter, UK., and
he noted that the actual test of shark cartilage that was provided by its backers was
found to be contaminated. "There is no evidence that shark cartilage offers any
benefit, but there is some evidence that it may do harm," ** notes Dr. Ernst.
Considering his position, he could hardly be called "establishment" or being
unreceptive to new approaches to medicine.
One can understand the desperation of
patients and their friends in turning to this questionable substance, sadly.
Oh, perhaps we should mention that sharks do
get cancer. It's just that few of them have walked into a clinic seeking treatment.
