New Approach to Colitis

A new report from The Journal of Nutrition*, observes that the colonic fermentation of carbohydrates "play a vital role in maintenance of colonic integrity and metabolism." The reference is to colitis.

For the most part, it is butyrate that is of great importance for colonic health, they note. Butyrate is created by action upon those carbohydrates that are fibre also called "resistant starch."

..."The improvement...by the inflamed mucosa 'mucus membranes in the colon] appeared after 14 d 'days] of RS 'resistant starch] supplementation 'in the animals tested.] Emphasis added.
