Kola Nut Extract--A Dangerous Diet Aid?

These are not new studies, but our attention was called to them when we noted the presence of kola nut extract in some diet pills.

"Kola-nut extract induced a number of overt 'nerve toxicity] signs in 'animals.} A decrease in the total body weight and an increase in the absolute weights of the liver, kidney, brain and testis were observed after 18 weeks oral administration." ...J. Applied Toxicology. Emphases were added.

"These data suggest that the possible role of kola nut chewing in human cancer 'disease] should be explored in countries where kola nuts are widely consumed as stimulants."...Food Chemical Toxicology.

"The influence of fresh kola-nut extract on locomotor 'motion] activity of 'animals] was studied using direct...observations...It was observed that a medium dose (5mg. per kilogram) significantly increased the locomotor activities whereas a low dose (2.5mg. per Kilogram) had no effect and a high dose (10mg. per Kg.) showed depressive 'emphasis added] effects on the 'motion] activities."...Acta Physiol. Pharamocol. Bulg.
