Lancet says drug should Have been off market then.

Nov. 4, 2004:  The Lancet, a highly regarded British medical journal, examined 25,273 patients in 18 clinical trials done before 2001. They discovered that those given Vioxx had 2.3 times the risk of heart attacks as those given placebos or other pain drugs.

In an editorial, the journal said, "For with Vioxx, Merck and the F.D.A. acted out of ruthless, short-sighted and irresponsible self-interest."

Aspirin, anyone? Two years ago we pointed out the superiority of aspirin to both Vioxx and Celebrex. Yes, but there's no money in it, huh?
