DRUG / HERB DANGERS

A Natural Alternative to Aspirin?

A new study reveals that phytic acid (in fibre-rich foods*) has anti-inflammatory action similar to, though less than, ibuprofen, at least in animal trials. Moreover, as the scientists noted, it protects gastric (stomach) cells. A small number of people, about 5%, are stomach-sensitive to aspirin and are given other drugs in place of it. These other drugs are either inferior to aspirin or are more dangerous. Ibuprofen has been modified only slightly from aspirin and so does not increase heart disease risk (as does Vioxx and probably Celebrex) or cause severe liver damage as does Tylenol in long-term use.

*Such as: Soy beans, brown rice, whole wheat and whole rye.
