SHORT TAKES ON BIG TRUTHS
Brief excerpts and comments on medical journal reports.

"Dietary Fiber Intake and The Risk of Colorectal 'colon and rectal] Cancer...

RESULTS: Fiber intake from cereal, fruits and vegetables was not associated with 'risk] for colorectal cancer.

From: Journal of the Amer. Medical Assn., vol. 294, 2005. By: many.

Our comment; judging correlation between colon and rectal cancer from diets containing cereal, fruits and vegetables is like saying rain causes stock market declines because it sometimes rains when the market goes down. It's not pinpointing the savior or the villain. Our research indicates that INSOLUBLE fiber reduces the risk of colon and rectal cancer. That survey did not distinguish among the types of fiber.

Sad But True

"Development and implementation of patient safety systems 'in hospitals] is at best modest...While 74% of the 'responding] hospitals reported full implementation of a written patient safety plan, nearly 9% reported no plan...

"'Also,] while a substantial percentage of hospitals have medication safety systems only 34.1% reported full implementation at survey..."

From: Journal of the A.M.A., vol. 294, 2005. By Drs. Longo, Hewitt, Ge & Schubert.

A few years ago, Ralph Nader stated that up to 300,000 people are killed yearly by hospitals. We don't know how accurate this figure is, but it is certainly high. Anecdotally, one of my friends bled to death IN THE LOBBY of a  hospital in Miami, Florida, awaiting treatment for the correction of a previously erroneously done surgery.

Another guy who sat 6 feet from me in an office once told me, "My father was the ADMINISTRATOR of 'name omitted.] He always told me "They're never going to get me into that place. They're going to kill me."

According to the son, they eventually did.

And finally, when I asked my doctor-uncle about New York's Montefiore Hospital before I went there for a hernia operation, he said, "Any time you leave a hospital alive, thank your lucky stars."

So what's the point of all this? Eat carefully and exercise regularly, and reduce the chances of your ever going into a hospital.
