"Nonalcoholic [fatty liver disease] may progress to cirrhosis and advanced fibrosis. Mainly, oxidative stress and [excessive cell death] are implicated in the [development] of progressive [fatty liver disease.] Melatonin is not only a powerful antioxidant but also an anti-inflammatory and anti-[cell death] agent."

Scientists tested animals by, in two groups, inducing fatty liver and not inducing it in two other groups as controls. One of the groups were fed Melatonin. Their observation? "The present study suggests that melatonin functions as a potent antioxidant, anti-inflammatory and anti[cell death] agent."

Editor's note: Melatonin, a natural substance produced in the Pineal gland in our necks, has received perhaps undue praise as a sleep-inducing agent. What it has not be sufficiently credited with is as a general health-inducing substance with exceedingly low toxicity. 3 mg. a day would seem to be a helpful addition to our diets.
