"Smoking is thought to cause oxidative damage to 'blood vessel linings,] but the exact way 'it] predisposes to coronary artery disease is unclear," Dr. Philip Kaufmann, University Hospital, Zurich, wrote.
"However, these 'damages] are reversed by administration of vitamin C."
Dr. Paolo Camici, Hammersmith Hospital, London, found the report interesting, though it remains to be seen whether vitamin C ".... can actually prevent coronary artery disease in smokers."
Thus he advises that increasing the intake of fresh fruits and vegetables
among smokers remains good advice, rather than large scale administration of
vitamin C.
