"St. John's Wort 'herb]...may be considered for short-term treatment of mild-acute depression,"...in new guidelines of the American College of Physicians-American Society of Internal Medicine, reported by The Lancet, May 6, 2000.
The British medical journal noted that the FDA here has not approved St.
John's Wort. And the physician group vice president, Herbert Waxman observed
that there is no standard for content of St. John's Wort pills. He added
that labels for the herb are more accurate as to actual content in Europe
than in the U.S.
In Britain, the Medicines Control Agency 'MCA] said that "St. John's Wort is
an unlicensed herbal remedy so it cannot be recommended by the MCA as a
treatment for depression."
DETAILS: Essentially then, we are neutral on this herb at this time.
