In the Journal Menopause of May, 2008, black cohosh in altenative health, was shown to have an effect in the body's nervous system toward reducing depression in post-menopausal women.
For women "...those with mild symptoms [as hot flashes and night sweats] or those who cannot or will not take HRT [hormone replacement therapy]...it may be appropriate [as alternative medicine.]"
"Results from carefully designed studies on herbal treatments for...menopausal symptoms never addressed specifically safety issues. Sporadic reports show dangerous adverse effects of these [soy, black cohosh, dong quai, ginseng and vitamin E alternative medicine]...preparations as well as hazardous interactions between botanic [alternative medicine] and conventional medications."
"Conclusions: On the basis of experimental data, the use of 300 [milligrams per kilogram**] of black cohosh [as alternative medicine] appears quite safe in [animals.] Nevertheless, in humans the safety of [black cohosh] should be further monitored, in terms of patient-related factors."
* Refers to a daily dose. A kilogram equals 2.2 lbs. In your editor's view, an excessive dose.
