Is St. John's Wort For Real?

In reviewing the actions of the herb St. John's Wort, professors at the U. of Georgia College of Pharmacy, Athens, noted that "...'it] has been used for the treatment of wounds, bruises, bacterial and viral infections, and most recently, to alleviate mild to moderate depression."

But they wanted to know how it works. After testing, they concluded, "...St. John's Wort exhibits significant antioxidant properties  (emphasis added) which may contribute to its therapeutic actions."

DETAILS: There was no mention of any testing of St. John's Wort for possible interactions with drugs or of side effects.
