Discoveries are made virtually every day in research centers around the world.
Unfortunately, they are reported years later (if ever) in the mass media. A perfect example is the recent PBS program on aging, of which some 1/3 was about telemeres. Without going into details, let us say that the proposition was made that perhaps this substance in our cells, which gets shorter when we age, is the secret of life.
Surprise! Scientists thought at first that this was the case. For three years, it is no longer believed. Perhaps PBS will take it back in another three years. Science has suspected for some time quite another cause of aging. Starting with Dr. Denham Harmon in 1972*, and carried on by himself and such as Drs. R.S. Sohal, T. Ozawa, G. Barja, B.N. Ames, R. Weindruch, S. Birt and others, there have been many breakthroughs.
Here's a New Discovery! Drs. Barja and Herrero have just proven that it is oxygen radical damage in our cells' energy center, called the mitochondria. The more oxygen activity, the shorter the life span of animals. And the less the damage, the longer the life, they found.
This actually confirms the original hypothesis of Dr. Harmon. And it is not difficult to reduce the damage, and possibly to extend healthful life. We just eat more foods that contain substances that reduce this harmful activity. And of course, taking Vitamin E and C, the latter in modest amounts.
The foods? Green tea, cooked tomatoes, spinach, dark grapes, etc.
