Aging

What happens when we age? One thing is muscle degeneration, which can be reduced by weight training*. Another is a decline in the function of our immune systems. This makes us more susceptible to infection as well as to Alzheimer's and related diseases.

There have been many studies of the use of vitamins and of drugs-particularly of seligiline - with this drug combined with vitamin E getting the most publicity. Originally in The New England Journal of Medicine, l997, vol. 236, the pickup by newspapers indicated the benefit of taking both.

PROBLEM: The greatest benefit was shown by using vitamin E alone, significantly besting the results in patients of combining it with the drug! The trial revealed that of those taking 2000 i.u. (international units) of vitamin E for two years, 22% had a loss of ability to perform normal activities. Of those taking the drug alone (recommended dose 10 mg.), 28% weakened. And as a control, those taking a dummy pill (placebo) 31% weakened. So, while the drug was better than nothing, vitamin E was even better.

*Weight training is the current term for the use of bar bells. Your local Y may have a class in it.
