Glucosamine for Knee Pain

"The purpose of this study was to examine the effects of oral glucosamine* supplementation on the functional ability and degree of pain felt by individuals who had regular knee pain, most likely due to previous ...cartilage damage, and possibly osteoarthritis...

"Conclusions: ...glucosamine supplementation can provide some degree of pain relief and improved function in persons who experience regular knee pain...The trends in the results also suggest that, at a dosage of 2000 mg 'milligrams] per day, the majority of improvements are present after six weeks." Emphasis added.

In British J. of Sports Med., vol. 37, 2003.

By Braham, Dawson & Goodman, Dept. of Human Movement and Exercise Science, U. of W. Australia, Crawley, W. Australia 6009.

*Obtainable from mail order vitamin distributors, health food, and drug stores with and without Chondroitin, another natural substance used in the area.

DETAILS: The 2000 mg. daily dose seems high. It may be that when combined with Chondrotin, with which it is often paired, it might have a quicker effect, and allow for lower dosage. It is typically sold in tablets containing 300 mg. of Glucosamine and 200 mg. Chondrotin. One might try 3 of these a day and go to higher doses when required.
