Vegetarians May Be Short of This, But Supplements Help
A report in
the journal Medical Hypotheses (vol. 63, 2004,) noted that
while vegetarian diets while have a very favorable effect on a
range of vascular risk factors, some studies
have revealed that vegetarians are more sensitive to
substances that induce aggregation of blood platelets (clumping.)
The
report proposed that this may have been due to a shortage of the protein
taurine in
their diets since taurine is
found almost exclusively in animals. And, that "Supplemental intakes of
taurine as
low as 400 milligrams daily have been reported to markedly reduce" the
susceptibility of platelets to platelet clumping.
