Melatonin, Good and Bad
There are remarkable benefits to melatonin, the component of the pineal gland at the base of the brain. We will be covering these this month. We begin however, with two cautions. One is that it should be taken ONLY before bedtime, since it can make you drowsy. You can imagine the risk of taking it before driving or in other situations where alertness is required.

Second, according to a report in Biological Trace Elements Research of Sept., l999*, zinc reduces some melatonin positive effects, so one should separate them by at least three hours. Note that zinc is present in most multiple vitamin capsules.

*By Drs. Chen, Lin & Sheu, Dept. of Internal Medicine, Taichung Vereran's General Hosp., Rep. of China.
