Cystic
Fibrosis Help
Scientists* have now found
that DHA (docosahexanenoic acid,) which is found in fish oils, have
reversed signs of Cystic Fibrosis in animals.
Francis Collins, who co-discovered the basis for the disease, said of
the discovery, "In terms of basic research, this is one of the most
exciting things to come along in a long time."
Scientists at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center in Boston, when
testing afflicted animals, found that their lungs, pancreas and
intestines were all low in DHA and higher than normal in arachidonic
acid. The latter we add, is a causative factor in inflammatory diseases,
and is found principally (surprise!) in chicken, turkey and eggs. The
fatty acid imbalance "may be the underlying cause" of the
disease, Beth Israel scientist Dr. Steven Freeman told the Wall Street
Journal on October 11, 1999.
Cystic Fibrosis afflicts 30,000 people in the U.S., is generally fatal.
* Revealed at the annual conference of the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation.
