We have all heard about calcium and vitamin D promoting strong bones. Some have heard about magnesium and boron. Now new research has added vitamin K to the list.
Recent reports from the massive Framingham Heart Study have revealed that the risk of hip fractures in the elderly went up when their vitamin K intake was low and went down when they ingested sufficient amounts of the vitamin.
The American Journal of Clinical Nutrition in May reported that those taking
in 56 micrograms of K had many more fractures than those taking 254
micrograms. But you don't have to worry about just how much exactly you take
in. What you need do is merely eat those foods that are rich in it, namely
spinach and broccoli and other dark, leafy vegetables like romaine lettuce.
One serving of spinach provides about 300 micrograms!
