OSTEOPOROSIS

Bones and Osteoporosis--Beneficial Foods

We all know that at least in some manner, consumption of calcium is important against osteoporosis (porous bones.) But other than taking calcium pills--which should have both magnesium and boron included--what foods are rich in calcium? And how do you know which calcium pills are better absorbed in the body?

Testing calcium pills...drop a tablet into 6 ounces of room temperature-vinegar. Stir every 3 minutes. Pill should dissolve within 30 minutes if apparently easily absorbed by the body. If it doesn't dissolve, try another type of calcium pill. Poor dissolving is less bone-helpful.

Following is a list of calcium-rich bone-helping foods:

Non-fat milk (you knew that.) And, low-fat yogurt, broccoli, cauliflower, soy beans, almonds, salmon and dark green leafy vegetables.

Another tip--Vitamin D. If one takes calcium pills, one should take at least 400mg. of vitamin D, which regulates calcium in the blood.

We would be happy to answer any questions about this or any other health-related topic. Write to us at healthbul@msn.com and we will research the possible backache treatments for you. Never a charge.
