Which Vitamin E?
Is A-Tocopherol Over-rated?
"ABSTRACT: Despite promising evidence from ..experiments and observational
studies, supplementation of diets with a-tocopherol 'commonly sold vitamin
E] has not reduced the risk of cardiovascular disease and cancer in most
large-scale clinical trials...We studied the effects of supplementing diets
with 'a-tocopherol] on 'blood] concentrations of y and s-tocopherol* in
a...placebo-controlled trial in 184 adult non-smokers...Compared to
placebo..a-tocopherol reduced y and s 'significantly.] In view of
the potential benefits of y and s-tocopherol, the efficacy of 'commonly
sold vitamin E] may be reduced due to decreases in..y and s-tocopherol
levels..."
*We use the letter s to
represent sigma tocopherol.
