Avocados and
Weight Loss
"First, we wanted to
dispel the
myth that avocados are
fattening
and therefore should be avoided in energy 'calorie] restricted diets.
Second, we examined the effects of avocados, a rich source of
monounsaturated fatty acids 'fats] as part of an energy-restricted diet
on weight loss, serum lipids...and vascular function in overweight and
'on] obese subjects...
"Sixty-one...volunteers (13 men and 48 women,) 'all of whom where very
overweight,] were assigned to either of two groups. The experimental
group consumed 200 grams* a day of avocados,
which substituted for 30 grams of other mixed dietary fats such as
margarine or oil, and the the control group excluded avocados
from their energy-restricted diet for 6 weeks...
"CONCLUSION: The
consumption of 200 grams a day within an energy-restricted diet
does not compromise
weight loss
when substituted for 30 grams of mixed dietary 'food] fat. 'Blood fat],
fibrinogen 'clot affecting]...and blood pressures were not affected by
weight loss or avocados intake. Emphases
added.
*There
are 355 grams in a pound. So this amount would be just under a pound of
avocados.
