Fat Gain and Muscle Loss (Sarcopenia)
The following was digested from the medical journals;
Journal of Gerontology
European J. of Clinical Nutrition
European J. Applied Physiology
FASEB J
Trends in Endocrine Metabolism
Annals of The N.Y. Academy of Science
(a partial list.)

"Aging is associated by a redistribution of both fat and lean tissue within the body.  Intra-abdominal fat accumulates more rapidly..." We know, we know.:)  But importantly, it could lead to insulin resistance, eventually culminating in Diabetes.

"Sarcopenia, the loss of muscle mass and strength with age, is becoming recognized as a major cause of disability and morbidity in the elderly population."
Another report notes that "oxidative damage" is a factor.

We could go on, but what if anything is the answer? It's not definitively established but clues exist in the necessity for anti-oxidant foods and vitamins, and reduction in the body's production of tumor necrosis factor, a contributor to muscle breakdown. Also, strength training (bar bells for example,) was recommended.
